The new deal & 3r's
The new deal-
The new deal is Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR)'s way to run in government. He wanted to counteract the great depression. Since president Hoover believed in the idea of "Rugged Individualism" where everyone is on their own and the government is not their to help, FDR decided that the government needed to be there for the citizens. FDR claimed that we should treat the depression with "as great as the power that would be given to [him] if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe." He said this in his first inaugural address, meaning that we should treat this crisis as if we were at war, with just as much intensity and commitment. By doing this he created the 3 r's, relief, recovery, and reform.

Governmental check were given for food if you worked for agencies such as the Civilian Conservation Corps or the Works Progression Administration. Programs and Agencies such as the CCC or the WPA helped conserve our natural resources and save the futures of young men. They saved starving families from literally starving to death by offering a way they can work to earn checks.

RecoveryRecovery was made to help the economy back to normal during and after the depression. Programs were designed to boost the economy through government spending as well. FDR decided to put more of the youth into school and limit farm production. These systems were known as the National Recovery Administration and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. The NRA was made to eliminate competition between businesses and create codes of fair practice and set prices. The AAA paid the farms and businesses to kill of excess livestock and use every once of farming land they owned. This was to reduce crop surplus and raise the value of the crops.

ReformReforms found the causes of the depression and prevented a crisis like this from ever happening again. Reforms were meant to fix the banking and financial aspect, whether it was lending practices, trading, or corruption. FDR created an activist state which gave citizens protection against unpredictable turns in the market. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation eliminated untrustworthy banks who may have harmed the country for over a century. The Securities and Exchange Commission got rid of bad investment habits and gave Americans a confidence boost in stock markets.
